Productivity software (also called personal productivity software or office productivity software[1]) is application software used for producing information (such as documents, presentations, worksheets, databases, charts, graphs, digital paintings, electronic music and digital video).[2] Its names arose from the fact that it increases productivity, especially of individual office workers, from typists to knowledge workers, although its scope is now wider than that. Office suites, which brought word processing, spreadsheet, and relational database programs to the desktop in the 1980s, are the core example of productivity software. They revolutionized the office with the magnitude of the productivity increase they brought as compared with the pre-1980s office environments of typewriters, paper filing, and handwritten lists and ledgers. In the United States, some 78% of 'middle-skill' occupations (those that call for more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor's degree) now require the use of productivity software.[3] In the 2010s, productivity software has become even more consumerized than it already was, as computing becomes ever more integrated into daily personal life.

An office suite is a bundle of productivity software (a software suite) intended to be used by office workers. The components are generally distributed together, have a consistent user interface and usually can interact with each other, sometimes in ways that the operating system would not normally allow.[4]
The earliest office suite for personal computers was Starburst in the early 1980s, comprising the WordStar word processor, the CalcStar spreadsheet and the DataStar database software.[5] Other suites arose in the 1980s, and Microsoft Office came to dominate the market in the 1990s,[6] a position it retains as of 2019.

iWorkРІР‚в„ў08 is Apple's response to Microsoft Office. The suite offers the Pages text editor, Numbers spreadsheet application and Keynote tool for making presentations. At 469 MB, the pack makes for a chunky download. YouРІР‚в„ўll have to be patient with it as it installs on your Mac. Afterwards, all you need to do is click on one of the applications, Numbers, Pages or Keynote to get started. Annoyingly, a start-up screen from where you can choose to buy or try the program will pop up every time you launch one of the applications.
All three programs are sleek, colorful and intuitive. We were anxious to finally get our hands on Numbers and were not disappointed. The application makes it really easy to add all sorts of formulas and enter multiple information into your cells. It doesn't show the traditional Excel grid view and lets you add different styles to your tables instead.
All of the apps offer loads of templates to start off from. Controls are easily accessible and Apple seems to have made an effort on elements like page layout in Pages, intelligent tables in Numbers and smart builds in Keynote. We were also very much impressed with the quality of the charts available for each application. Keynote was probably the most intuitive of the three applications and it allows you to create great looking presentations in seconds.
iWork'08 is a powerful suite which brings on many new features that you won't find in Microsoft Office. Mac users finally have their own batch of text editing, spreadsheet and presentation, all in a sexy and very intuitive interface.
